Sycamore Networks

Ring and Mesh Interworking

Concurrent Support Simplifies Network Operations and Evolution

Sycamore optical switches provide diverse SONET/SDH and resilient mesh protection options. Support for SONET/SDH protection schemes (from APS/MSP and UPSR/SNCP to 2- and 4-fiber BLSR/MS-SPRing) meets the stringent performance requirements of voice traffic (sub 50ms restoration). Flexible, mesh-based protection options enable competitive service level agreements (SLAs) and tiered pricing strategies.

Most importantly, distributed intelligence and dynamic mesh restoration eliminate single points of failure, with diversely routed circuits to protect mission-critical applications across the network. An intelligent optical mesh ensures high network availability and disaster recovery.

Sycamore switching platforms can integrate ring and mesh protection schemes on a common circuit. This allows multiple ring and mesh interworking options, including the unique ability to interoperate standards-based 2- and 4-fiber BLSR/MS-SPRing and mesh-based restoration within the same network. Interworking promotes interoperability between Sycamore switches and other network elements, full restoration of working traffic with no loss of ring capacity, and higher network resiliency.

Sophisticated circuit management features make it possible to configure, provision, operate, and manage ring and mesh networks simultaneously – and allow both automated and manual provisioning in all topologies.
